Program Notes:

All I Can Do is Wait is an exploration of the liminal space between understanding and unknowing using the
framework of the Fermi Paradox found in Brennan Lucas Stafferi’s poem Palindrome: Responses to the
Fermi Paradox. According to The Planetary Society, “the Fermi Paradox is [physicist Enrico Fermi’s] general
observation that the conditions for intelligent life to arise don’t seem uncommon in the Cosmos, but we don’t
observe anybody out there.” Early on, Brennan shared with me that this poem can be read forwards and
backwards, line by line, like a palindrome, where a word or phrase can be read forwards and backwards and
it’s the same. Each of these readings of the poem became their own movement that follows a similar musical
structure and can be done in either order to honor the poem’s palindrome, which is anchored by the fulcrum
line “All I Can Do is Wait.” Through paradoxical gestures pivoting between two notes, suspended phrases,
and shifting key centers, we are left hoping for a resolution to questions that just keep us waiting.
